How to I troubleshoot an EMS alerting station?

The alerting radios at EMS stations have two different configurations. The radio will likely be sitting in a tray. If the tray looks exactly like this, we will refer to that as the VMute configuration. If the tray looks like this, but includes an LED light and a toggle switch then we will refer to this configuration as legacy.

VMute Configuration

  • Make sure power to the radio
  • Make sure power to amplifier
  • Make sure radio tuned to DISP 1
  • Is the radio receiving traffic?
  • Can you see IDs of transmitting on radio?

If the radio is receiving audio, then we have ruled out the radio as the issue. This leaves issues between radio, amplifier and speakers.

  • Audio control on the radio is not a factor.
  • Audio control on amplifier (mic1 & mic2 controls) on amplifier should be set to only allow a bit of sound. If mic2 and aux switch exists on front of amplifier and above amplifier volume controls, be sure it is set to mic2.

This is all that can be done from a technical perspective. The radio should be producing sounds. If it is not, then it appears that there is an issue with the amplifier and/or speakers. If this is after hours, a temporary solution (crashbox) should be viewed as the solution to get it up and running. If it is during regular business hours, contact technical services team to determine next steps.

Other considerations on the VMute configuration.

  • Make sure the VMute menu item is selected to eliminate unneeded radio traffic. When VMute is not selected, this will leave the radio 'open' for all radio traffic on the selected talkgroup. When VMute is selected, it will mute all radio traffic until the radio is awakened by an tone\alert.
  • Adjust Amplifier audio to a tolerable\desired level
  • Perform tone tests
  • Make sure if ceiling speakers have volume controls that they at an operational level
